My goal as a teacher is to create a personalized and enjoyable curriculum for every student to match the individuality of each student's approach to learning. These lesson plans play to each bassoonist's strengths and weaknesses by nurturing what is already there and comes naturally while also supporting and strengthening the skills musicians need today. While learning to master musical ideas through the bassoon, my students also cultivate lifelong skills that go beyond the instrument and support success in non musical endeavors.
My comprehensive approach to lessons includes working on aural skills, sight reading, music theory, and music history in addition to instructing bassoon technique. Taking advantage of every music making opportunity possible is very important for musical growth, and I encourage my students to seek out those opportunities. My current and past students have successfully won and held auditioned positions with local youth orchestras and the All-State orchestra and wind ensemble. I teach students of all ages and levels, from beginning to advanced, and students with different life goals and career paths.
In addition to helping students gain a musical foothold, I believe reed making is a crucial and rewarding component of playing the bassoon, therefore I make sure every student learns how to work on bassoon reeds. This ranges from simple adjustments of store bought reeds to making the entire reed from start to finish. I also offer a private lesson version of a reed making course I teach at the University of Southern California, Thornton School of Music, which focuses solely on reed making for students and professionals looking to improve this facet of their music making.
